Lyα Radiative Transfer: A Stokes Vector Approach to Lyα Polarization

چکیده

Ly-alpha emitting galaxies and giant blobs (LABs) have been extensively observed to study the formation history of galaxies. However, origin their extended emission, especially LABs, remains controversial. Polarization signals from some LABs discovered, this is commonly interpreted as strong evidence supporting that emission originates resonance scattering. The Monte Carlo radiative transfer code LaRT updated investigate polarization using Stokes vector formalism. We apply a few models explore fundamental properties Ly-alpha. Interestingly, individual photon packets are found be almost completely polarized by sufficient number scatterings (N_scatt > 10^4-10^5 in static medium) or Doppler shifts induced gas motion, even starting unpolarized light. It also pattern can exhibit non-monotonically increasing cases, besides commonly-known trend monotonically increases with radius. primarily determined degree anisotropy radiation field, which eventually controlled medium's optical depth velocity field. If once achieve ~100% polarization, radial profile appears correlate surface brightness profile. A steep tends yield rapid increase linear near source location. In contrast, shallow gives rise slowly pattern.

Radiative Transfer Effects on the Lyα Forest

Strong observational evidence for a fluctuating ultraviolet background (UVB) has been accumulating through a number of studies of the H I and He II Lyα forest as well as accurate IGM metallicity measurements. UVB fluctuations could arise both from the inhomogeneous distribution of the ionizing sources and/or from radiative transfer (RT) through the filamentary IGM. In this study we investigate,...

Lyα ABSORBER CORRELATIONS AND THE “BIAS” OF THE Lyα FOREST

Lyα absorber correlations contain information about the underlying density distribution associated with a particular class of absorbers. As such, they provide an opportunity to independently measure the “bias” of the Lyman alpha forest, i.e. the relationship between H I column density and underlying dark matter density. In these proceedings we use hydrodynamic simulations to investigate whether...

Understanding Lyα emitters

This publication contains the conference summary of the Understanding Lyα Emitters conference held at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg October 6 10, 2008. The scope of the conference was to bring together most of the scientists working in the field of Lyα emitters, whether at low or high redshift, or on observational or theoretical aspects, and to summarise how far the field...

Polarization of the Lyα Halos Around Sources Before Cosmological Reionization

In Loeb & Rybicki (1999; paper I) it was shown that before reionization, the scattering of Lyα photons from a cosmological source might lead to a fairly compact (∼ 15) Lyα halo around the source. Observations of such halos could constrain the properties of the neutral intergalactic medium (IGM), and in particular yield the cosmological density parameters of baryons and matter on scales where th...

The Polarization of Scattered Lyα Radiation Around High-Redshift Galaxies

The high-redshift Universe contains luminous Lyα emitting sources such as galaxies and quasars. The emitted Lyα radiation is often scattered by surrounding neutral hydrogen atoms. We show that the scattered Lyα radiation obtains a high level of polarization for a wide range of likely environments of high-redshift galaxies. For example, the back-scattered Lyα flux observed from galaxies surround...
